Summer Internship Program
The Minnesota State Board of Investment (SBI) is a leading investment organization dedicated to delivering exceptional risk-adjusted returns and operational excellence for our stakeholders. Established in 1885, we work everyday to ensure the retirement security of Minnesota's public employees. We also serve the State of Minnesota by investing the assets of various tax-advantaged savings plans, state cash accounts, and non-retirement accounts. We employ a workforce of professional staff which includes: investment officers, financial and investment analysts, accountants, attorneys, compliance specialists, information technology specialists, and administrative staff.
The investment research internship offers students a comprehensive introduction to investing in a specialized asset class by embedding students with a dedicated team of experienced investment professionals. The financial services internship allows students hands-on exposure to investment accounting practices across multiple asset classes.
Participants receive targeted support and training, which enables them to make meaningful contributions to the SBI and its stakeholders. The SBI summer internship program provides an excellent opportunity to expand professional networks, connect with mentors, and interact with professionals in the investment community.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants must be current undergraduate students majoring in a business-related field who have completed at least two years of college coursework. Applicants who expect to graduate before the beginning of the internship are not eligible.
Work Location
The SBI office is located in the Retirement Systems of Minnesota Building, 60 Empire Drive, Suite 100, St. Paul, MN.
Hours
Students are expected to work 32 hours per week, in-person, Monday through Thursday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Compensation
Interns receive an hourly salary in the range of $19 - 23 based on relevant prior work or extracurricular experience.
Program Term
The core internship program begins the first Monday in June and concludes 9 weeks later, with an option for interested students to stay up to two additional weeks.

The application period for SBI's 2026 Summer Internship Program has closed. The application period for SBI’s 2027 Summer Internship Program is expected to open in February 2027.
